An introduction to data recovery
When a file is deleted on a computer or the recycle bin
is emptied, all this does is simply remove the visual representation of the file
and tell your computer that you don't require the file anymore - the data is still
on your computer. Over time, parts of these deleted files are gradually over writen,
often leaving fragments of text and data. Using data recovery software it is possible
to recover and view these files.
Identity theft
Tests on second-hand computers often reveal old
documents, emails and private information.
Because of this, it is very important that all computer users are aware that unless
precautions are taken, their data and personal information may be available to others.
In just the same way as many now choose to shred their personal and financial documents,
much the same care should be taken with digital data.
Before selling or giving away a used piece of computer hardware, think about whether
the device has been used to store personal information - typically, this would include:
- Desktop computers
- Laptops
- Mobile phones
- Memory cards
- Internal and external hard drives
- USB pen storage
It is often possible to recover data from devices such as these using software that
is available in shops and online.
